A new six-storey apartment building overlooking Sutton Green in Sutton, South London. Harp & Harp worked on the project from concept design through to completion on site. The building contains 30 apartments (a mix of one, two and three bedrooms) above ground-floor retail space.
The design was formulated after extensive analysis of the adjacent conservation area on Sutton High Street, with its rich array of brick commercial architecture dating predominantly from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The new building sits comfortably in that context: a robust materiality gives it weight and permanence to match its older neighbours, while the detailing stays crisp and contemporary — buff and red brick laid in bands, white glazed brick to the ground-floor colonnade, and a black brick plinth at pavement level.
